Cat Bai Airport Vietnam poised for expansion

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has approved a project to construct a second terminal at Cat Bi International Airport in Hai Phong province.

Local media reported the plan would help to meet growing passenger traffic at the airport, which is expected to reach 8 million a year by 2025.

The CAAV said initial procedures to commence Terminal 2 construction could begin as soon and involve an investment plan presented by Vietjet that is pending final approval.

The present terminal was designed to handle just 2 million passengers a year and when Terminal 2 is completed, Cat Bi Airport’s capacity would increase to 8 million.

Cat Bi International Airport is expected to reach the 2 million ceiling much sooner than forecast due to rising passenger demand.

The number of passengers rose 42.5% in 2016, while in the first three months of this year, the airport welcomed 538,000 passengers and the figure is expected to reach 2.1 million by the end of this year.

VietJethas proposed an investment of USD263.8 million in the second terminal. The plan is to turn it into a regional hub for the airline.

The company will provide 30% of the capital with the balance raised through the Ho Chi Minh City Development Bank (HDBank), the report said.

Cat Bi airport is located in Hai An district, about 8 km southeast of central Hai Phong.

Hai Phong is located 102 km from the capital Hanoi and is the major commercial port for northern Vietnam.
